Textual Analysis - '13 Going On 30'

13 Going on 30

                        (up to 4:35)

All of titles are over the introduction to the film, so they are over moving images. This makes it more complex and difficult to read them as your attention is automatically taken over by the acting. This represents their demography. It is rated a 12 by the BBFC, and its main audience is teenage girls. The titles being over the acting suggests that the demography doesn’t appreciate the work and names which go into a film. This is a contrast to Kill Bill, where there is a black screen with white bold titles on it. This makes it obvious- perhaps because the demography appreciates the talent more (for instance Quinten Tarantino) and thus are interested in reading it separately. In ‘13 going on 30’ the titles are written in pink which also suggests the demography of stereotypical teenage girls.

The first few titles are over a dark blue mist with pink stars, as the producers are listed the dark clouds turn into the background of the school photo shoot, and the titles continue. The blue sky and white clouds would suggest happiness and a dream life however the first shot we see of the actress who is of the girl wearing braces and whom looks miserable. The clouds also suggest that she has a high status, however this is contradicted. The clouds could also suggest her dream of becoming a sixth chick.
