Film Genre Analysis

Film Genre Analysis

We initially decided against :
  • Western
  • Horror
  • Sci-Fi
  • Animation
  • Historical Period
  • Family Films
  • Thriller
  • Bollywood
  • Action
  • Adventure
  • Crime and Gangster
  • War
  • and Drama
This is because we felt that with our knowledge, cast availability and budget limit it was not feasible. For instance a Western would generally be set in a dry, barren environment with wooden building, stereotypically it would also contain guns and other weapons. This is not in our accessibility, and therefor we decided against them.

The genres we were left with we analysed, discussing both advantages and disadvantages for all:

Spoof
+ We wouldn't have to use famous actors- as it would be a mimic of them.
+ We would already have film ideas, as we would borrow and mimic those from more well known films.
- We would have to have access to quite a few good actors/ actresses, who could look like a famous star.
- There is a fine line between comedy and stupidity.
- We may occur some copyright issues as it would be a mimic of a copyrighted film.

Musical
+ The music could be all sung on set, or recorded.
+ It would be original and playful.
- We might have copy right issues if we used lyrics to a current song.
- It takes a skilled lyricist a lot of time to make up a song, and we don't have access to one.
- If not completed properly it could look cheesy.

Indie
+ It has a unique and unconventional style which would be relatively easy to mimic.
+ It would combine nicely with another genre, to give a twist on an original taste.
+ It is an up and coming genre being used increasingly.
- It is generally aimed at a niche genre.

Comedy
+ It would be a griping and entertaining opening which would increase the chance of the audience viewing the full film.
- There is a fine line between comedy and stupidity.
- Coming up with the comic dialogue/events would be difficult for us as we have no experience
- Many people have different tastes and opinions in what is comedy, and therefor we may offend some people.

Rom-Com
+ The storyline would be simple to come up with, and put many twists on.
+ It is the genre which appeals most to my group.
+ The conventions of this genre are consistent.
- Usually famous actors are used as the main roles to gain publicity.
- It can be plain and predictable sometimes.

From this analysis I am guided towards a Rom-Com with an Indie twist. I feel that combining the two genres will balance up the pros and cons of each. I will still continue to research titles and credits under all genres so I can compare and take the best aspects from each.
